Death Metal Review

For the last couple of weekends, Leland has been playing a lot of shows with his death metal band, Throne of the Wretched. When he started this band, I told him that I would probably not be going to a lot of his shows. Not because I don’t want to be supportive, but because I do not like death metal music.

I went to his first show, well, because it was their first and a lot of our friends were going to be there…so I basically went to hang out with my friends, not to support my husband.

Last weekend Leland played two shows. Again, I wasn’t planning on going, but the singer quit so Leland had to step up and do the vocals. If you didn’t know this by now, Leland is a bit of an egomaniac, so I just HAD to go to the shows and see him as a front man. He did an awesome job, but my intentions aren’t to stroke his ego.

The death metal scene is unlike anything else I have ever seen. At both shows this past weekend, I was one of maybe three women at the venue. I am assuming the other women were also wives or girlfriends of members of the other bands that were playing. The members in all four bands pretty much looked the same. They were all wearing some sort of death metal t-shirt, several of them were promoting Satan with sayings such as Who needs a God when we have Satan? Leland was wearing a t-shirt from a band called Carcass, and other guys were wearing t-shirts from bands called Cannibal Corpse, Maggot Twat, and Tony Danza Tap Dance Extravaganza. Death metal is high class, isn't it?

All of the guys there must have been trying to look metal because they all seemed to wear the same scowl and looked as though they were just waiting for the chance to eat someone alive. If I had encountered any of these guys on a dark street, I would definitely be reaching for my mace and brass knuckles. But I wasn’t on a dark street, so what did I do?

I talked to the scary guys.

As it turns out, they weren’t scary people and didn’t want to eat my face off. Some were soft-spoken and shy, some were friendly and outgoing, some just wanted to talk music. None of them were scary and no one tried to get me involved in any weird Satan worshipping rituals. They were just interested in playing heavy music and supporting the death metal scene.

I found the whole night to be sort of funny. For some reason I couldn’t help but laugh when I saw Leland playing and singing…well, death metal singers don’t really sing, they growl. Leland’s fingers were moving faster than I had ever seen before, and though the music is as far from mainstream as music can possibly get, their musicianship was more technical than I have ever seen. No, I still don’t like the music, but watching the members of all four bands play really made me appreciate death metal.

But not enough to enjoy it when Leland BLASTS the music in the house and in the car.

Death Metal scares me. Are they really satanists, or is it just a facade so they scare their fans???

=D lol...they didn't eat your face out.

I rather encounter a hard metal guy than a ghetto gangster...that has intimidated me in the past. Scary times.

yeah add me to the column of people who don't get death metal... But to each their own. I don't get opera either so.

And I'd think that you'd really appreciate fast fingers... ;)

Hahaha awesome!! I think the image someone portrays with his or her clothing is so freaking interesting. I've met bonefied cowboys and rodeo ladies who wear nothing bu Wranglers and Stetsons....gangstas who wouldn't be caught dead with mud on their shoes....and punk lovers who have more colors in their hair than Rainbow Bright. The one thing all these people had in common? They were real, interesting, not-at-all cliche people. Moving around a ton and being thrown into diverse environments is so freaking cool. It knocks my socks off every time.

There is something so engaging about seeing a band in person! It's been forever since we've been to a concert-- when is Leland's band playing next, LOL?

Not a huge fan of death metal, but don't hate it either. Not really my style, I guess.

I can, however, appreciate musicians doing their thing. Watching it done live. Kinda like you said.

I am not a fan of death metal either. I like the hippie shit like Dave Matthews band. (I am far from a hippie.)I do applaud you for putting up with it and actually going to a concert!

Death metal isn't my thing either, but it's interesting the things we can learn about people by just talking to them, isn't it?

Like you, I would've assumed that these guys would eat my face off, sacrifice me to satan, or who knows what else. However, in that environment I would think at least some of them might be like my husband who doesn't try to eat my face off (not in a bad way anyway) or sacrifice me to satan, and so I'd probably talk to them like you did. Then, I'd feel ashamed that I thought they were going to eat my face off.

I admire you going to support him, because that music scares the crap out of me! ;-)

I have NO knowledge of death metal music. I like loud, hard music, but I'm more of a *gasp* mainstream girl.

Good for you for being supportive and talking to the scary satan dudes;)

Hahahaha.... I used to date a drummer from a death metal band called Deth Kultur BBQ. So I know exactly what you're talking about with the "growl". Though I didn't necessarily love the music, we always had a good time at the shows.

I never got Death metal until I dated a base player in a death metal band and heard them do a Canibal Corpse cover ...er...tune. There was just something about it.

They are not face eaters at all (-:

Now that's a twist that you don't care for the music and he plays it.

Trust me, they secretly wanted to eat your face off!

My bf is a free-lance musician and I occasionally tag along to his gigs. Mostly I get tired of sitting at the bar by myself so I don't go very often. Don't get me wrong - I'm very good at being a social butterfly and talking up people I don't know, but sometimes sitting at the bar with a book is all I'm interested in - and that attracts some winners for sure!
I read your comment on Elle's blog so I stopped by to say hi =)

Also not a fan, don't get it. But isn't kinda of hot to date a musician? So naughty girl like,.. and to top it all, a dead metal musician. That is so bad, and you are married to him! Sigh,...

I was a little groupie girl after college. I had my boyfriend that was the lead singer. It was death metal that was also weirdly soft and awesome at times. For some reason, singing men turn me on. don't know why. Maybe hubby should join a band. that would spice things up a bit.

That would be a scene I am totally unfamiliar with. I like how you say they don't sing, they growl. When are you going back?

JennyMac said...

Glad they didnt eat you alive?

And wait, you have brass knuckles?

Where can I get one of those t-shirts?

It is funny...you assume guys like that will be really rough but often it's all just performance.

McVal said...

lol! My son is like that too. He tries to get me to listen to the stuff he likes, but if I hear one more song where someone is growling or graveling... AAAAAHHHH!! I'll growl back! he hates it when I do that...
p.s. I'm glad they didn't kill you!

I've been reading some of your past posts and I've been cracking up with laughter and been concerned with the rocky state of the in-laws.
Thanks for stopping by to say hi - I really appreciate it! I'm glad I came across your blog - I look forward to future posts!
